Lithium has been one of the protagonists of the conversations between the mining industry players in recent times. And it is that it is predicted that, thanks to the mega-trends that are breaking into the world with force, such as the migration towards a low-emission energy matrix, with the consequent demand for resources for electromobility and the need to transform day by day to mining in a more sustainable industry, its global market will triple in the coming years. This scenario puts Chile at the center of the conversation, since by having one of the largest proven reserves of the mineral, it has the possibility of becoming one of the leaders in this industry.
For this reason, and given the strategic condition of lithium for the country, the Alta Ley Corporation, in coordination with the Ministry of Mining, is in the process of generating the Roadmap “Technological Strategy for Lithium in Chile”, a document that will allow defining A consensual vision of the strategy to follow to develop new collaborative high-impact technological projects that aim to develop the value chain, driving productivity and sustainability in lithium exploitation.
An initiative that kicked off with the development of its kick-off session, in which the full board of directors participated for the first time, made up of 13 actors linked to mining companies, technology providers, energy institutions, government and universities. who, during the remainder of the process, which culminates at the end of this year, will meet once a month to validate the progress and define the next steps.
“Today we are faced with a great challenge, which we consider key for the future of lithium in our country. Chile has a great opportunity and we are sure that the collaborative work of this wide and recognized group of actors can be a great contribution so that this technological strategy that we are proposing for our country is a document that opens a path towards the future, that allows us to raise more efficient and sustainable technologies to develop the industry’s value chain ”, said Fernando Lucchini, executive president of the Alta Ley Corporation.
Among the actors that will be part of this process are: Pablo Altimiras, from SQM; Ellen Lenny-Pessagno, from Albemarle; Nelson Pacheco, from Enami; Jaime San Martín, from Codelco; Eduardo Bitran; Rodrigo Paredes, from Enel; Juan Carlos Guajardo, from Plusmining; Javier Coopman, representative of the Ministry of Mining; María José Inestrosa, from CCHEN; Víctor Pérez, executive director of ASDIT; Emilio Bunel, from the Catholic University; Humberto Estay, from AMTC; and Juan Cariamo, from Vantaz.
Stages of the process
The initiative began to be developed at the beginning of this year, a period in which the review and complementation of the baseline report, developed in 2019, was carried out, which aims to account for the antecedents of the world lithium market, the processes of extraction and refining, their costs, and some emerging technologies that could be incorporated, as well as the main and relevant players in the lithium value chain, among others.
Currently, the project starts its strategic alignment stage, for which a broad board of directors was formed that represents the industry’s value chain, which recently met for the first time to participate in the Kick Off, instance in which they were defined the next steps of the initiative, which involve raising the individual vision of each of the directors to define a consensus vision regarding the technological strategy in the value chain, and the prioritization of gaps to be addressed by the Roadmap.
Between the months of September, October and November, different strategic, tactical and in-depth conferences will be held in order to present the final document in December of this year.
