“Uncertainty Prevails”: The Impact of U.S. Tariff Increases

The President of the United States, Donald Trump, announced tariff hikes on various products and trading partners. The most recent measures include surcharges on steel and aluminum production, raising concerns about other minerals, such as copper.

Juan Carlos Guajardo, Executive Director of Plusmining, stated in an interview with Agenda Económica PM that “uncertainty prevails” in the market regarding these tariff increases imposed by the Trump administration.

“The markets are unsure whether to interpret these decisions as a negotiation strategy of the new U.S. administration or as a long-term strategy to force the reindustrialization of the United States,” he added.

Regarding the case of copper, Guajardo emphasized that “I don’t think the copper industry
can be compared to steel or iron.”
“We are not on the radar of what the Trump administration considers unfair trade,” he pointed out.
